Our Clinical Psychology Service lies within the Wigan & Leigh Borough, which is part of the North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS trust. The Trust provides specialist services for people with mental health problems and learning disabilities, together with a range of other specialist services. The population served in the Wigan & Leigh Borough is approximately 308,000.

A vacancy has arisen within the Learning Disability Psychology Specialty in the Wigan Borough of the North West Boroughs Healthcare  NHS Trust. The team is currently established at 3 qualified psychologists with a Consultant Psychologist lead working across the Borough into the multidisciplinary learning disability teams. The post holder would be responsible for delivering psychological intervention for adults who have a learning disability and suffer from psychological problems. Work includes direct intervention, consultation work, carer and staff training and working with and across multi-disciplinary teams and systems.  The successful post holders should have good interpersonal skills, experience of working with complex psychological issues and individuals with a Learning disability. Experience of teaching and training staff groups in psychological working would also be beneficial.


The successful post holder will require Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or its equivalent) as accredited by the BPS, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and Neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology. We welcome applications from newly qualified psychologists.


The post holders will have opportunities for CPD and self development activities, with participation in departmental presentations and meetings and networking with colleagues throughout the service and across the Borough. As well as built in time and support for CDP activity.

This post is subject to an enhanced check with adults barred list Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check. Successful candidates will either have a valid DBS check with the Trust or will be required to pay for the cost of the DBS Disclosure which is £47.50, the cost of which will be deducted from first salary.
